Every day, it's becoming more important to care for the environment and make small changes to avoid using harmful chemicals and toxins. Most people think it's difficult to transform your house into one that can be considered eco-friendly. However, changing small items and activities around your home makes it easier than ever! With the huge focus on creating more environmentally-safe products and equipment, this allows you to make small changes to work toward a better home.

1. Lighting Up the House

One of the biggest areas that use energy is electricity. There are a few easy ways to help save you both money and energy! One, switch out all your lightbulbs to ones that are 'energy-efficient'. These can be bought at any local store and they use less energy and last longer than regular ones. Another alternative method people consider is solar panels. Installing panels and using these to light your home is a great way to save on energy usage. However, it can be expensive to begin this transition, but it saves you money in the long run because you lose the electricity bills.

2. Create Your Own Compost and Garden

Don't waste kitchen scraps and other food by tossing them into the trash. Instead, turn them into compost which you can use to start a garden! By recycling the food, you are preventing it from going to waste, but rather using it to build your own food and ingredients. This allows the nutrients to help your plants grow in a garden.

3. Doing Laundry the Friendly Way

Everyone does laundry. Whether they use a washer and dryer in their home or visit a laundry mat, clothes need to be washed and dried. However, switching to an eco-friendly method for this is incredibly simple! Using cold water when washing your clothes, saves energy because the water no longer needs to be heated. Additionally, hanging your clothes to dry during warm months eliminates the use of a dryer during the hot seasons. It takes more time, but it saves energy, and your clothes and laundry last longer because the method is more gentle on the fabric.

4. Upgrade to a Programmable Thermostat

Switching to a digital thermostat that you can program saves money and energy. Turn down the temperature when you're not home, but set it so that when you will be arriving back, it warms/cools the area. This means, you won't be spending money to keep the unit running while you are gone and no one is home, but you will step into a comfortable house when you come back. It also allows you to control the temperature during the fall and spring seasons where it's colder in the mornings, but the afternoon warms up.

5. Invest in towels and rags

Many people use napkins, paper towels, and other paper products on a regular basis. However, this is adding to the waste we add to the environment. You don't have to completely eliminate paper towels from your home, but make small changes to use a cloth or rag instead. Dry your dishes with a towel and wipe down surfaces with rags. They can be washed and reused, which saves on energy as well.

6. Use Natural Cleaning Products

Consider switching to natural cleaning products to use in your home. When you clean with regular products, the toxic chemicals are being washed away into the water supply. This is unhealthy for the environment, but can also be unhealthy for you as well. This also eliminates any harmful fumes that enter your home when you use harsh chemicals to clean. There are also eco-friendly cleaning services that can do this for you by using their natural cleaning supplies and methods.
